Historical Society Committee Founder
- School Year 2019-2020
Having participated in several continuing education programs with the New York Historical Society (NYHS), I founded the District 2 Pre-K’s Historical Society Committee. I worked with the NYHS to create several Professional Development workshops for members of the committee.
During these workshops we learned about the inquiry method, best practices related to inquiry, and image analysis. After the session I brought a record and a record player into my classroom. Students engaged in the inquiry method as they tried to determine what the objects were and their uses. Their curiosity was sparked as they tried to determine the relationship between the two objects. Students were engaged in trying to determine the purpose of the items as they actively interacted with the items. They asked questions in an effort to draw conclusions and worked on their problem solving skills. This activity further instilled a love of learning in my students who asked to play “the guess what this object is” game many times throughout the year. I enjoyed sharing this information with my colleagues.

During the summer of 2019, I attended a 2-day PD on the topic of Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education. My reflections can be found in the email below.

On the evening of December 5, 2019, I attended The New York Early Childhood Professional Development Institute Leadership Initiative sponsored discussion “Advancing Equity in Early Childhood: Who is leading and toward what?.” At this event, I participated in conversations around implicit bias, racism, and culturally responsive education, particularly in early childhood. I participated in meetings of the equity team where we worked on revising our mission statement to make it more culturally responsive, and ensuring that classroom libraries are culturally responsive.
