Social Emotional Learning
Since social-emotional growth impacts every aspect of childrens’ lives, it is essential to provide tools in the classroom to help children express themselves. In order to promote self-awareness and self-management of emotions, thoughts, and behaviors, my classroom has a cozy corner with a bean bag chair, curtain and plushies. This is a place where children can go to relax with their thoughts.
Several helpful tools found in this area include the class feelings book. Children relate to seeing their friends’ faces expressing different emotions and reference the book when they experience big feelings that they have difficulty verbalizing.
Each morning and throughout the day as needed, students move their picture to the appropriate column that describes how they are feeling. This helps children identify and label emotions while allowing teachers to check in and bond with students. Next to the feelings chart, there are options in the cozy corner of activities children can do if they are feeling out of sorts.
As a fully remote teacher during the 2020-2021 school year, students created feeling charts for their homes.
