Shared Reading
Shared reading encourages early reading enjoyment while building pre-reading skills. Shared reading in my classroom involves simple songs and rhymes related to our unit of study presented in an interactive and engaging manner. As an introduction, I hang the shared reading poster on the easel in the front of our classroom. This piques their interest. After engaging in a picture walk to make predictions and connections between the illustrations and the text, we recite the rhyme. Over subsequent days, we act as “picture detectives” acting out what we see, identify rhyming words, match words and pictures with velcro using beginning letter sounds and name and circle letters on the poster. The shared reading poster then gets hung in the library where students interact with it.
